Pairings: This is a luxuriantly full and lush red that is beautiful with pork, pulled pork, tenderloin, chops and ribs, burgers, grilled mushrooms, roasted root vegetables.

Avoid pairing white fish, oysters, and shellfish.

Cheese Pairings: Sharp cheeses such as aged cheddars and apple cheddar, smoked cheeses, rich, creamy Spanish cheeses. This wine is smooth and rich enough that you could pair with it with flavored Jack and Havarti cheeses.

About This Wine Virgil’s Vineyard is a micro-production winery in Napa, California. The Smuggler’s Son, an Award-Winning California Red Blend of Old Vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petite Syrah is a tribute to Virgil Kipper, family winemaker and smuggler during Prohibition in Detroit, Michigan.

Virgil Kipper was born and raised on the family farm in North Vernon, Indiana and moved to Detroit, Michigan in the late 1920’s during Prohibition to work for his uncle, Peter Holdreith, who owned a prominent Detroit restaurant called the Holdreith Chop House. Virgil worked as a waiter by day and smuggled booze from across the river in Canada by night supplying the restaurant during Prohibition. Virgil also was a family winemaker who made wine all his life for family and friends to enjoy. The Smuggler’s Son commemorates the family winemaking and bootlegging heritage of the winery’s namesake.

Elegant ruby in color, with fragrant dark fruit and subtle aromas of vanilla, cocoa, and cinnamon on the nose. Enticing flavors of black cherry, blueberry, and black raspberry abounds with accents of toasted almond, dark chocolate, light peppercorn spice, and licorice on the finish. A well balanced wine with smooth tannins and light delicate oak.
